The 361º

︎Editorial, Art Direction, Typesetting, Production.
The 361º is a biannual publication that delves into art and design, examining the intricate connections between creators and their work. Through interviews, features, and essays, the magazine offers emerging artists a platform to showcase their creations while gaining insights from more established figures in the field. Each issue revolves around a seemingly everyday theme, explored through the unique perspectives of diverse creatives.

For this project, I took on a multifaceted role, overseeing all aspects from content gathering and curating the art direction, to designing and managing the production of the magazine.

Format  & Navigation

The magazine’s format is as unconventional as its content. Once opened, it transforms into a perfect square, subtly nodding to the 1:1 ratio prevalent in social media. The publication is divided into five sections, each named after a specific angle: 0º, 90º, 180º, 270º, and 360º.

To navigate between sections, readers physically rotate the magazine 90º clockwise, creating an engaging, interactive reading experience. Arrows are strategically placed throughout the publication to guide the reader’s flow, ensuring a seamless transition between each section.

Thematic Exploration

The inaugural issue delves into the theme of the Body, exploring its representation throughout history and how contemporary artists are reshaping these narratives today. The issue examines the societal perceptions of our bodies and their broader cultural impacts.

The first four sections each focus on a different aspect of the body, aligned with specific degrees: 0º – Head and Shoulders, 90º – Torso, 180º – Identity, and 270º – Legs and Genitalia. The final section at 360º, which remains constant across all issues, is a curated catalogue featuring artwork for sale by the contributing artists.

Design and Production

The design and typesetting reflect the magazine's theme of reimagining the mundane. Classic typefaces—Times New Roman and Arial—were chosen, but their condensed variants, less commonly used, suited the narrow and tall page format, giving a fresh perspective on familiar fonts.

The grid system is modular, with 6 columns by 10 rows on portrait pages and 10 columns by 6 rows on landscape ones. This flexible structure adapts to the rotating layout, ensuring balance and consistency throughout.

Production-wise, the narrow format informed the typographic choices, and to emphasize the flat, square shape when opened, I chose a flexible paper for the interior, a thicker cover, and a sewn binding with an exposed spine that allowed the magazine to lay flat.

The result is a captivating publication created by and for creatives, not just for its rich content but also as a physical object that boldly challenges traditional magazine conventions.

The project was nominated for the 2020 Laus Awards as part of the 2019-2020 Editorial Design Masters Program at ELISAVA.
